It was difficult to say goodbye to our elephant friends this morning.  I cried.  I never got tired of photographing them.  We were so lucky to be at the camp shortly after the birth of the new baby, Curfew.  The last baby born at camp was two years ago!  He is adorable and mischievous.  I could write a book about the elephants and our experiences with them, but there are not enough hours in the day.  I have many stories to tell.  It seems the blog will have to go on past this trip, in order for me to keep up with it all.  We have toured many villages in Northern Thailand, visited Myanmar (Burma), and arrived today in Laos.  Unfortunately, I have to catch up on some sleep, for tomorrow there are many more adventures to come.  I will keep the photos coming, so you can at least get a snapshot of what we are taking in.  We are completely blissed out……and completely enchanted with this part of the world.  Thank you for your comments and for your visits!

Elephant trekking

tender foot

Peek a boo

Golden Triangle vista

I’m totally beat and we have an early day tomorrow, but at least I got some photos up to share.  We had quite a day of exploring and elephant trekking, and I’m looking forward to telling you all about it, but right now it is more important for me to get some sleep.  I will say though, the blue pajama’s are the “official” Ma’hout uniform, which we now are certified to wear.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments.  sweet dreams, ck

Ma’hout or mahoot, is the Indian word for an elephant rider, trainer or keeper. According to a two thousand year old Sanskrit manuscript, the most important part of training an elephant is winning the animal’s confidence and affection.

The Government of Thailand set up the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre for the conservation and care of domestic and wild elephants and supporting the communities that depend on them for their livelihood.  Four Seansons Tented Camp has joined the Foundation, offering guests the opportunity to help rescue elephants off the streets of Thailand and provide them with a humane and natural environment.

We spent the day learning local dialect words to “cue” our assigned elephants, so we could ride them.  We had to pass a test.  I cannot walk without crutches, yet somehow I managed to ride an elephant with ease.  Curt has fallen completely in love.  I’m not sure if he’ll be returning to NY, but I am sure that being with the elephants makes him as happy as I’ve ever seen him.  Lewis on the other hand, takes it all in stride, as he does everything, and acts as though he has been a ma’hout for lifetimes.  I actually saw a bird’s nest in a tree, as I looked down on it from the top of my steed, Puang Phet, which means Bunch of Diamonds.  She is a superstar.  The whole day was an incredible experience.  I’m off to bed thinking of the 30+ elephants who live in the bamboo forest here, roaming around tonight in the steady rain.  I wonder if they are thinking about us, and the adventures we shared today?

Travel day (make that days)

We are in that “Twilight Zone” phase of not having a clue of what day or time it is.  We are totally confused about when we should eat or sleep.  We are currently in a day room, near the hotel in Bangkok, as our flight to Chiang Rai doesn’t leave until late afternoon.  I will say Cathay Pacific is a fantastic airline.  The business class pods make a huge difference for sleeping, and the food and movies were excellent.  We had a gorgeous view of the full moon, from 30,000 feet+ out the window of the plane.  Magical.  It all adds to the total sense of disorientation.  Lewis is loving the dumplings.  Mom is going to get a Thai massage, and then we head back for our flight north to our tented elephant camp.  We can’t wait!

Preparing for our trip

Hot shot at 12

We are on the homestretch of preparing to leave.  Camera gear is organized, bug spray, snacks, ipods, etc.  Yesterday, Curtis picked up Lewis from four weeks at sports camp in New Hampshire, grumpy that he wasn’t staying for the full seven weeks.  Mumbling, moody, twelve year old boys in full puberty, don’t always make the most pleasant traveling companions.   B R E A T H E   To top it off, I stepped into what was virtually a ground hog hole on second avenue on Thursday afternoon, and badly sprained my ankle.  So now I’m enduring the challenges of packing……on crutches.  bloody hell.  As my girlfriend says, “Welcome to **** happens!”  So, knowing that I AM SUPERWOMAN, I’m doing everything humanly possible to expedite the rehab of my ankle, so I can leave these crutches with someone in Thailand, who needs them more than I do.  Ready, set, GO!  This should be interesting.
